United States Deputy Secretary of Department of Commerce visited SHIAC

 

Mr. Kelly R. Welsh, the Deputy Secretary and General Counsel of United States Department of Commerce and his team visited SHIAC on September 25th, 2014. The team was composed by Ms. Gwenann Manseau, Senior Counsel of United States Department of Commerce, Mr. David Averne, Commercial Counselor of United States Consulate Shanghai and Commercial Attache of United States Embassy of China and United States Consulate Shanghai.  The team surveyed the issues of development of Chinese arbitration and innovations of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone Arbitration Rules (hereinafter the “FTZ Rules”).

 

Mr. Wen Wanli, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of SHIAC presented warm welcome to Mr. Welsh and his team.  Mr. Wen introduced the 26-year-development of SHIAC, the establishment of China (Shanghai) Free Trade Zone Court of Arbitration and Shanghai International Aviation Court of Arbitration, the innovations and applications of the FTZ Rules and great support and endorsement from China’s court’s opinions of judicial review on the FTZ Rules

 

Mr. Welsh expressed his appreciation to the efforts and achievements in the FTZ arbitration by SHIAC. He believed that the Shanghai FTZ offered an unprecedented opportunity to the internationalization of China’s commercial arbitration.  The team and Mr. Wen had a deep discussion on issues like open up to Panel of Arbitrators, Interim Measures in Arbitration, Application of International Conventions, Identification of Foreign Laws and Enforcement of Arbitral Awards involving the FTZ.

Ms. Wang Weijun, Deputy Secretary General of SHIAC and Mr. Weng Guanxing, BD Section Chief of also attended the meeting.
